Route 291 widening
The newly widened, five-lane Route 291 between Franklin Street and Eddystone Borough line will act as the $25 million Gateway to Chester. PennDOT rebuilt the 2.1-mile stretch of Route 291 over the past two years to improve travel and enhance economic development opportunities along Chester's waterfront and central business district. The road was widened to 66 feet to provide two travel lanes in each direction and a center lane for left turns. Crews also built sidewalks on both sides of the street; added a 9-foot-wide parking lane on the north side; installed modern traffic signals at Route 291's intersections with Flower Street, Highland Avenue and Post Road (Route 13); installed drainage pipes; replaced several major utility lines under the road; and landscaped the corridor.
