News May 18, 2010 ANTI-VIOLENCE RALLY PLANNED IN CITY OF CHESTER Chester, PA – On Thursday, May 13, concerned Chester residents gathered at City Hall and joined Mayor Butler to discuss what can be done to stop the violence in the City of Chester and how to address the criminal, economic and social issues that may lead to violent behavior. With plans to hold an Anti-Violence March and Rally on Saturday, May 22, residents and community leaders are encouraged to attend a second meeting on Thursday, May 20 at 5:30 pm at City Hall in the community room to provide input, show support for the initiative and help with the planning process. By hosting this March and Rally, Mayor Butler hopes to promote togetherness and unity in the community. At the event, residents will receive literature and materials. Guest speakers will empower with a message to take back their community. According to the Mayor, a safer community must start with all stakeholders making a commitment to do their part, and then following that commitment through until crime has been drastically reduced. “We believe that this effort, which will hopefully bring together large numbers of concerned citizens, police, churches, businesses and other organizations, is a positive step toward defeating the criminal elements in our community.” The objectives of Mayor Butler’s anti-violence initiative is to build trust between residents and law enforcement, redirect conflict with youth in the schools, educate business owners on violence prevention, provide alternatives to violence, such as activities and jobs, and eliminate blighted communities that foster violent behavior. The purpose of the Anti-Violence Rally is to fight against senseless violence, bring awareness to the community and raise hope for the residents. By working together, young people will have a chance to see that there are other alternatives to violence. It also serves as a process of grieving for those who believe that their love ones, friends, or family member’s senseless murder may have gone unnoticed.
