CITY CELEBRATES EARTH DAY IN WASHINGTON PARK
Chester, PA -- In celebration of Earth Day today April 22, 2010, more than 30 students from Stetser Elementary School planted a tree in Washington Park, located just outside their school at 17th & Melrose Avenue in Chester, PA. The planned Earth Day activities are part of a collaborative effort between the Chester Shade Tree Commission, Widener University and the City of Chester, to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

“I am very concerned about our environment and its future,” said Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr. “It’s important to raise awareness and instill concern for the environment in our children.”

Before planting the tree, the students painted clay pots in which they planted and watered seeds to grow, with the assistance of volunteers. Dr. Kathleen Hornberger, Director of Environmental Community Outreach for Widener University, worked with the students and explained how things grow and the importance of trees and maintaining green space. Following the activities, the students gathered together and planted a Linden tree in the park.

The Chester Shade Tree Commission was formed in 2005, by an act of City Council, to oversee the planting, maintenance and protection of shade trees, as well as to study and recommend the type of trees and locations for planting, pruning or removal. The Commission holds monthly meetings in City Hall.
