Widener University and City Year partner to reward service
CHESTER—Widener University and City Year, a leading national youth service organization operating in Philadelphia and 19 other U.S. cities, today announced a scholarship program that will provide eligible City Year participants with more than $50,000 in scholarships to attend Widener.

Widener scholarships will be open to City Year corps members, senior corps members, and alumni who have completed at least one year of service in the program. The university will admit up to five Widener University/City Year National Service Scholars each year. Scholars will be offered a position in Widener’s prestigious Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program, a service based scholarship program that develops students’ leadership qualities.

The university will match the Eli Segal Education Awards provided by City Year up to $5,350. In addition, as members of the Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program, scholars will receive a $5,000 scholarship from Widener. Scholars will also be eligible for additional merit-based scholarships from the university.

In addition to the scholarships, City Year Greater Philadelphia and Widener will select up to 10 City Year corps members each year to take introductory English and math courses at the university free of charge. City Year members who pass these courses with a “B” average or better will be considered among the five scholarship slots available for the Widener University/City Year National Service Scholars. The university will also waive the application fee for all City Year members.

Widener University President James T. Harris III said the scholarship program recognizes and rewards the civic commitment of City Year participants who dedicate a year of full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models, working to transform schools and communities across the United States.

“This partnership highlights the vision and values of both Widener University and City Year, integrating the power of knowledge and service in addressing social problems,” said Harris. “The partnership will help bring idealistic and committed leaders with a high level of maturity, insight and experience working in diverse settings to Widener University and help them to realize their dream of a college degree.”

“City Year corps members are on a path to become true civic leaders, and their experience serving as tutors and mentors is an important step,” said City Year Co-Executive Director Wyneshia Foxworth. “Through this exciting new initiative announced by Widener, corps members will now be able to further develop their knowledge and skills so they can have an even greater impact. We are very proud of our corps, and we commend Widener for investing in young leaders for the benefit our community."

Widener becomes one of only four institutions in the tri-state area to match the Eli Segal Education Award, joining the University of Delaware, the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. Widener is the only institution in the area with a formal agreement with City Year to provide an additional scholarship and free courses for City Year members.
